Scaling clinical readiness of internationally educated nurses to address nursing shortages
That gap isn’t a hiring problem. It’s what happens after hiring. Nearly 1 in 5 Canadian nurses who left the profession in 2023 did so after a single year on the job. Across the board, 34% of new nurses leave within their first two years of practice. Meanwhile 94% of nurses report burnout symptoms, and 30% are working overtime weekly. Add in that 1 in 8 Canadian nurses now work outside the country where they originally trained, and the picture is clear: recruitment brings people in, but something is failing them on the way to independent practice.
Bluedrop ISM built AccelerateCR around that specific failure point. The program runs on three pieces: evidence-informed online learning, immersive VR simulation on Lumeto’s experiential learning platform, and one-on-one coaching from experienced clinical educators. AccelerateIEN, the first program in the suite, is built for internationally educated nurses translating existing clinical experience into Canadian practice. The delivery is concrete enough to walk through. Two weeks before a cohort starts, participants get a VR headset and skills kit shipped to their door. Week one is e-learning and VR navigation. Weeks two and three are simulation: daily worksheets, screen-based and immersive VR scenarios, live educator support, one full skills practice day. A nurse mentor is assigned before the cohort wraps, and support continues for up to eight weeks after.
A Newfoundland and Labrador pilot with 95 internationally educated nurses shows what that adds up to. Participants reached independent practice in about 11 weeks, against 15 weeks through traditional onboarding. Bluedrop estimates $15,000 to $20,000 in savings per nurse, or $1.5 to $2 million across every 100 nurses onboarded.
Sajida Chagani, an RN with NL Health Services who went through the program, said it helped her build confidence and start to thrive in Canadian practice, not just adjust to it.
Bluedrop and Lumeto will walk through the program together at next month’s executive webinar, including a live look at the VR simulation and mentor dashboards behind these numbers.
