Fundamentals of Mechanical Ventilation Now Available in InvolveXR Sim Lab

Are you looking to scale your critical care program while optimizing costs and improving training outcomes? What if your respiratory therapists, nurses and GME learners could master the fundamentals of mechanical ventilation without the risk of real-world consequences? Learning mech vent in virtual reality (VR) provides an innovative solution that combines immersive, hands-on learning with flexibility and scalability. Imagine trainees interacting with realistic clinical scenarios, adjusting ventilator settings, and responding to patient conditions in a controlled, virtual environment. This new approach not only enhances critical thinking and decision-making but also ensures cost-effective, scalable training that prepares healthcare professionals for the high-stakes challenges of critical care.
We are excited to announce that the first version of our Mechanical Ventilator is now available in Learning Experiences developed by our Clinical Education Specialists. Curated to train Respiratory Therapists, Nurses, and both undergraduate and GME learners, these adaptable Learning Experiences can enable you to introduce fundamental concepts of Mechanical Ventilation.

What’s Included in Our Learning Experiences?

  1. Volume Control Ventilation Adjustment Based on ABG Results: In this learning experience, learners adjust ventilator settings in volume control mode using Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) results. By analyzing ABG reports, participants will make necessary adjustments to improve patient oxygenation and ventilation.
  2. Pressure Ventilation Adjustment Based on ABG Results: Learners will engage with pressure ventilation mode, adjusting settings based on ABG analysis. This case emphasizes understanding how pressure ventilation settings affect gas exchange in critically ill patients.
  3. Responding to Ventilator Alarms with Mode Adjustment and ABG Analysis: This scenario involves responding to basic ventilator alarms, such as low tidal volume and low minute ventilation. Learners will adjust ventilator modes and utilize ABG analysis to ensure effective patient management, while considering necessary diagnostic imaging and lab tests.
  4.  Managing a Ventilated Hemodynamically Unstable Patient
In this advanced Learning Experience, learners handle a critically ill patient who is both ventilated and hemodynamically unstable. The focus is on adjusting medication and ventilator settings to stabilize the patient’s condition while monitoring overall hemodynamic status.
  5. Basic Assessment of a Ventilated Patient for New Learners This introductory session is ideal for beginners looking to gain confidence in managing a ventilated patient. It covers fundamental topics such as patient assessment, understanding ventilator settings, and recognizing important alarms.

Preparing Learners for Real-World Challenges

These Learning Experiences create realistic, adaptive training environments where learners can engage with complex, dynamic scenarios that test and improve their clinical decision-making. Instructors can also adapt the scenario, by changing the vitals and patients states on-the-fly, to the competency levels of each learner, providing more learning opportunities. Each scenario is designed to reflect real-world complexities, helping trainees gain the confidence and critical thinking skills needed to handle high-pressure situations involving mechanical ventilation. These Learning Experiences can also be preceded by or followed by Difficult Airway Management training or other critical care scenarios available in the ever-growing Lumeto Library to create holistic learning pathways.
